46% of Google Searches Have Local Intent. But AI Platforms Recommend Only 1.2% of Local Businesses. Here Is the Gap Worth Closing.

Introduction
Nearly half of all Google searches are looking for something local. A tradie, a professional service, a supplier, a specialist. Of those searches, 76% result in a visit to a business within 24 hours. Local search is one of the highest-intent, highest-conversion channels in digital marketing — and most businesses have spent years trying to rank in the Google Local 3-Pack to capture it. That foundation is still worth building. But a new gap is opening up alongside it. The use of AI platforms for local recommendations grew from 6% to 45% in a single year, according to BrightLocal's 2026 research. And when SOCi analysed over 350,000 business locations to see how many were being recommended by AI, the number was 1.2%. This article explains what that gap means and what businesses need to do to close it.
Why Local Search Is Still One of the Best Channels for Any Service Business
The fundamentals of local search have not changed. 46% of all Google searches carry local intent — searches for businesses, services, and suppliers in a specific area. Of those, 76% result in a visit to a business within 24 hours. 28% lead directly to a purchase.
The Google Local 3-Pack — the map with three business listings that appears at the top of local search results — appears in 93% of searches with local intent. 42% of searchers click on 3-Pack results, making it the most valuable piece of real estate in local search. Google Business Profile accounts for 32% of local pack ranking weight, reviews account for 20%, and on-page factors account for 15%, according to Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors Survey. Google Business Profile actions — calls, direction requests, website visits — increased 41% year over year between 2025 and 2026.
For any service business operating in a defined geography, local SEO remains one of the highest-return investments available. The data has not changed on this. What has changed is the parallel channel emerging alongside it.
The New Gap: AI Recommendations and Local Business Visibility
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index is the most comprehensive study of AI recommendation behaviour for local businesses published to date. Their research analysed over 350,000 business locations across 2,751 brands, measuring how often each platform surfaced or recommended those businesses in response to local queries.
The findings are stark.
ChatGPT currently recommends just 1.2% of all local business locations. Gemini recommends 11%. Perplexity recommends 7.4%. For context, the same brands appeared in Google's local 3-Pack 35.9% of the time. AI visibility is three to 30 times harder to achieve than traditional local search visibility, SOCi concluded.
The use of AI platforms for local recommendations grew from 6% to 45% in a single year. That trajectory is the problem. Not the 1.2% alone — that is a snapshot. The trajectory tells you where buyers are heading and how fast they are getting there.
The Overlap Problem: Why Your Google Rankings Do Not Transfer
The most important finding in the SOCi research is not the absolute recommendation rates. It is the overlap.
There is only a 45% overlap between brands that perform well in traditional local search and those that appear in AI recommendations. More than half of the businesses ranking well on Google are invisible in AI search. The signals that earn a position in the Google Local 3-Pack and the signals that earn an AI recommendation are partially overlapping but meaningfully different.
This matters because many businesses assume that ranking well on Google means they have local search covered. For traditional local search, they do. For AI-generated local recommendations, they may have nothing at all — and not know it. The buyer who searches Google and finds them in the 3-Pack has a very different experience from the buyer who asks ChatGPT "who is the most reliable pallet supplier in Sydney" and receives a list of two or three names that does not include theirs.
Key Takeaways:
- 46% of all Google searches carry local intent; 76% result in a business visit within 24 hours
- ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of local business locations, compared to 35.9% visibility in Google's Local 3-Pack
- AI visibility is 3 to 30 times harder to achieve than traditional local search visibility
- There is only a 45% overlap between businesses performing well in Google local search and those appearing in AI recommendations
- The use of AI for local recommendations grew from 6% to 45% in a single year
- Businesses appearing in both ChatGPT and Perplexity averaged 133 Google reviews vs 11 for those invisible to AI
What AI Uses to Decide Who to Recommend Locally
Insites published a 2026 AI Visibility Report based on a correlation study of 10,000 local businesses across ChatGPT and Perplexity, examining over 200 digital marketing signals against actual AI recommendation outcomes.
Their findings clarify what actually drives AI recommendation for local businesses — and several of the results are counterintuitive.
Google reviews volume was one of the strongest correlating signals. Businesses appearing in both ChatGPT and Perplexity averaged 133 Google reviews compared to just 11 for businesses invisible to AI. The volume of reviews — not just the rating — signals to AI systems that the business is established, active, and trusted by real customers.
Local Pack presence was a significant predictor. Businesses appearing in the Google Local 3-Pack were recommended 3.5 times more often by AI platforms than those that were not. Strong local SEO foundations remain a prerequisite for AI visibility — they are just no longer sufficient on their own.
Website depth and freshness also showed strong correlation. Businesses visible to AI had more than double the number of website pages on average. Sites that had not been updated recently were significantly less likely to appear in AI recommendations.
Technical SEO factors did not correlate meaningfully with AI recommendations. Core Web Vitals, page speed, and structured data showed weak or no correlation with whether a business appeared in AI-generated local results. The signals that matter for AI are trust, volume, and recency — not technical performance metrics.
The Accuracy Problem No Local Business Can Afford to Ignore

There is a separate issue sitting underneath the visibility gap: accuracy. SOCi found that business profile information was only about 68% accurate on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Insites' research found that while 93% of local businesses are known by AI platforms, only 55% have accurate details. AI is actively hallucinating information about the rest — wrong addresses, incorrect hours, outdated phone numbers.
A business being recommended by AI with inaccurate information is in some ways worse than not being recommended at all. The buyer follows the recommendation, finds incorrect details, and the trust the AI recommendation created is immediately destroyed. For service businesses where a phone call or visit is the conversion goal, an incorrect phone number or address returned by an AI recommendation is a lost lead.
The immediate action for any local business is straightforward: check what AI platforms say about your business right now. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini directly. The gap between what they report and what is accurate is the starting point for any AI visibility strategy.
What Local Businesses Should Do
The practical response to this data is not to abandon local SEO in favour of AI optimisation. It is to build both, understanding that they require partially different inputs.
Sustain your Google Local Pack presence. Reviews, Google Business Profile completeness, local citations, and on-page local content remain the foundation of local visibility. Businesses in the Local Pack are recommended by AI 3.5 times more often than those that are not. Strong traditional local SEO is a prerequisite for AI visibility, not an alternative to it.
Build review volume aggressively. The 133 vs 11 review gap between AI-visible and AI-invisible businesses is the clearest signal in the Insites data. Review volume is a trust proxy that both Google and AI platforms use. A systematic approach to requesting reviews from satisfied customers — consistently, after every completed job — is the single highest-leverage local SEO activity for most service businesses.
Ensure your website is accurate and regularly updated. AI platforms draw heavily from your website when forming local recommendations. A website with accurate service descriptions, correct contact details, a clear location, and recent content is more likely to be correctly represented — and recommended — than one that has not been touched in two years.
Check and correct what AI says about your business. If AI platforms have inaccurate information, the priority is identifying and correcting the source they are drawing from — typically your website, Google Business Profile, and any citations that appear in their training data.
Closing Thoughts
Local search is still the most immediately commercial channel in digital marketing. The buyer searching for a service in their area and visiting a business within 24 hours is a conversion profile most paid channels cannot match. That opportunity has not diminished. What has changed is that a new surface is emerging alongside it — one where only 1.2% of businesses currently appear and one that is growing at a pace the data cannot ignore. The businesses that treat this as a two-channel problem, maintaining their Google Local Pack presence while building the signals that earn AI recommendations, will capture both.
